JEWEL Open call#1 project – OPSIE

Project

ReCatalyst collaborates in Net-Zero Technologies demo project focused on optimisation of both catalyst materials and coating process parameters under the leadership of Hynology.

Acronym:

OPSIE

Project Name

Optimised Catalyst Particle Size Distribution for Efficient Coating Process

Project Time Frame

01.09.2026 – 31.05.2026

Project Description and Objectives

Hydrogen technologies are still facing high production costs due to the significant quantities of platinum-groupmetals (PGMs), particularly platinum (Pt), used as electrocatalysts in electrodes for proton exchange membrane fuelcells (PEMFCs). OPSIE aims to reduce Pt demand by improving catalyst utilisation within the electrode structure andreducing the scrap rate during membrane electrode assembly (MEA) fabrication. One of the major challenges inproducing MEAs for PEMFCs is achieving high-yield coating processes while simultaneously improvingelectrochemical performance and long-term durability. The project will therefore focus on optimisation of bothcatalyst materials and coating process parameters. ReCatalyst will optimise catalyst particle size distribution (PSD) to improve compatibility with Hynology’s advanced coating technologies. In parallel, Hynology will optimise the catalystink formulation and coating process parameters for spray coating and inkjet coating approaches, aiming to achieveimproved coating reproducibility and enhanced PEMFC MEA performance.
